Durand Eastman Park

FIG. 1A view of launch area at Durand on an early summer day, FIG. 1B aerial view
of launch area
Directions: The launch is located within Durand Eastman Park in
Rochester, NY.
The launch is located about 200 ft west of the intersection
of North Kings Highway
and Lake Shore Blvd. The launch is just west of Sea
Breeze and a few miles east
of Charlotte and the Stutson Street (now Pattonwood
Drive) Bridge.
From the SeaBreeze expressway, turn off so you are heading
west on Durand Blvd.
Upon crossing Culver, Durand Blvd becomes Sweet Fern
Road which then becomes
Lake Shore Blvd. Lake Ontario emerges on your
right. Upon passing N Kings Hwy,
turn right into a gravel parking lot with
a large "B" above it. If you see parking lot "C",
you have gone too far.
From the west, upon reaching Lake Ave and Pattonwood Drive, head east
on
Pattonwood Drive. Upon reaching St Paul Blvd, turn right and then
quickly turn
left onto Lake Shore Drive so you are again heading east.
Lake Ontario emerges
on your left. Continue until you see the first
parking lot on the left with a "B".
Turn left and park. If you reach
N Kings Hwy, you have gone too far.
Fees: None
Amenities: sometimes, there is a port-o-potty next to the parking lot.
Trash barrels present.
Best Wind Direction: Anything with a North in it.
Hazards: Do not sail with an offshore wind--the next land mass is 40
miles away and,
unless you get rescued, you probably will die of hypothermia.
Sail only with onshore winds.
Be careful crossing bike path
Regulations: no alcohol, no glass containers on beach, no pets on
beach,
no swimming in launch area (guarded swimming area just to the west)
Comments: sandy launch area, grassy rigging area, and short gear carry
to water.
Best in the spring and fall when winds come out of the north.
Launch is frequented
by kiters. Shoreline can get crowded during the
summer with picnickers, bathers etc.
Launch sits in a shallow cove
shielding the launch from westerly winds.
Notes: As with Seabreeze, this launch is at a sheltered portion of
the lake,
which means that West winds are blocked by the land mass -- as a result,
the best wind directions are somewhat limited to NW, N and NE
