Gwynn Island (Mathews County, VA)

FIG. 1 aerial view of Gwynn Island showing where the launches are
Gwynn island is located in Mathews County at the mouth of the
Piankatank
River. As with everything else, most of the property
is privately owned.
However, there is one publically accessible
launch at the east end of the island
at the end of Old Ferry Rd
(Rt 633). At the end of Old Ferry Road, there
is a sign that says
"End State Maintenance", beyond which is a sandy beach area
where one can launch from.
The other launch is from the campground at the end of
Buckchase Road (Rt
740). The campground is privately owned,
however they have been known to
allow windsurfers to launch
therefrom provided that you first check in with them
at the office.
The campground is closed until April 1. When open,
simply ask
at the office upon entering. If they allow you, the campground
has a nice sandy beach to the left of where you enter.
Both Gwynn Island launches face ENE.
Best Wind Directions (both launches): N, NE, E, SE and S
Comments for Old Ferry Road Launch: clean beach, jetties
present, wide exposure to most wind directions, sandy bottom,
no visible
hazards, homes near by but not a lot of "no trespassing"
signs. Do not
feel that you are on display. The Old Ferry Road
launch is about 2.5 miles
from the entrance to the island where
the Coast Guard station is.
Comments on Campground Launch: private property, need
permission, restrooms and fresh water supply present, closed til
April 1.
Bathers may be present on beach. The Campground
launch is about 3.0 miles
from the entrance to the island where
the Coast Guard station is.
